Proper Body Jewelry Cleaning

Before inserting any piece of body jewelry, make sure your hands are clean. It’s best to use an anti bacterial soap and either air dry your hands or use a lint free cloth. While it may seem like a preachy, unnecessary caution, the fact is most piercing infections begin by handling jewelry with unwashed hands.

Next, make sure the piece itself is clean. Do not submerge your piercing body jewelry in alcohol. Doing so will tend to loosen any adhesive and ultimately make the item more brittle.

The best way is to wash the piece in warm soapy water using a mild anti bacterial soap. It is acceptable to use a cotton ball or swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to wipe the part that goes through your piercing. This is a good way to sterilize the area that contacts your piercing, but again, do not submerge the entire piece in alcohol.

Jewelry cleaning tips

There are many different brands of jewelry cleaners on the market today. Depending on how your jewelry is made, these products may or may not be safe for your jewelry. Before using any jewelry cleaner, take a good long look at the jewelry and try to determine what it is made of.

First, any jewelry that has pieces glued on should not be soaked in jewelry cleaner. Instead, use a little Woolite mixed with water, and soak the piece for just a couple of minutes. Remove the piece from the mixture and dry it immediately - but gently - with a soft cloth. Use a soft toothbrush to gently scrub small crevices.

Believe it or not, toothpaste is a great cleaner of silver. Many people will tell you not to use it as it is abrasive and will scratch your jewellery but I have been using this method for over twenty years without a problem. In fact, it will save you money and is a more natural method of how to clean jewelry that you own.

How to clean your jewelry pearls: Avoid soaking pearls! They may come from the ocean - but water from your tap may damage them. Simply wipe the pearl with a damp cloth, then use a polishing cloth to give it back its shine. Never soak any of your jewelry overnight. It isn’t necessary, and it may harm the jewelry.
